Pressure Diffusion Temple
(PDT) technology.

Any glasses-wearer can confirm the importance of a comfortable fit. Glasses that don’t feel good don’t get worn. So to do its job, protective eyewear needs to be comfortable all day, while fitting securely enough to stay on even during rapid head movement.

Our PDT technology does exactly that while also protecting the temples. The glasses stay on securely without discomfort, all day long.

    Why is Fit important?

    40% of individuals suffering workplace eye injuries were wearing eye protection at the time of the injury.1 Global standards and many country regulations suggest careful consideration be given to eyewear fit; no specific guidance is provided on the definition of “fit” or how to evaluate.

    Background

    3M conducted global Voice of Customer (VoC) studies in order to understand the needs of workers using safety glasses. Protection, fit and comfort were identified as the most important aspects of eyewear selection.

    Adequate protection is always first priority and 3M strives to deliver products that exceed the requirements of safety standards. To help customers find better eyewear for their needs, 3M has begun a program to investigate the fit and comfort of protective eyewear, together with their influence on protection.

    Facial features can differ greatly from one person to the next due to a number of reasons. Various terms can be used to describe people and the problems they face when choosing eyewear:


    • Narrow Face
    • Wide Nose-Bridge
    • Delicate Features

    With this mind it is very difficult to design products that are suitable for all users. To design spectacles that fit everyone, the facial features of a wide range of populations were examined in a large-scale global study using the latest research methods. At the end the research provided quantitative data on facial dimensions.

    Population research


    • 3D modelling techniques were used to construct contour maps of facial features
    • 600 coordinates plotted
    • Global data used as input
    • 3D scans used to investigate diversity across ethnic populations
    • Data spanned the range between 5th and 95th percentile for width
    • Virtual head forms created in order to assess ‘fit’ during design stages


  • Ideal Temple Force Identified.

    As part of the research we used special measuring tools to identify a comfort zone - an ideal temple force that wasn’t too loose or too tight and would ensure optimum acceptability.

  • Pressure Diffusion Temple (PDT) technology.

    • 3M’s patented SecureFit™ PDT technology regulates the amount of force on individual head sizes to ensure the optimum pressure for a secure and comfortable fit.
    • The wrap-around design means that the pressure is applied on the less sensitive back of the head. The glasses feel lightweight and comfortable, yet stay secure, even during rapid movement by the wearer.
    • The extremely flat and flexible temple design is ideal for combining with 3M™ Protective Earmuffs, with minimal loss of attenuation.

    Special temple design with multiple struts provides constant pressure equalisation.



  • 3M™ SecureFit™.

    Another result of our bespoke tool: 3M SecureFit Temple Technology ensures acceptable temple pressure for more than 80% of head sizes. So we have proven to fit a wider range of head sizes - comfortably and securely.

3M™ Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog
Rugged Anti-Scratch.

Fogged-over spectacles are annoying at the best of time, and in work environments they can be downright dangerous. You need clear vision under all conditions.

So we provide it with our new Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog coating. On both sides of the lens, it makes water droplets flatten out and form a thin film you can clearly and easily see through.

  • Coating features.

    3M™ Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog coating provides advanced anti-fog, antiscratch properties designed to enhance eyewear performance. The 3M™ Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog coating helps keep lenses clear in rugged, dusty, steamy and wet environments providing at least 12 times longer lasting fog resistance than traditional anti-fog, anti-scratch coatings.

    Designed for the toughest environments, 3M™ Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog also features an anti-static property which helps keep dust, dirt and particles from sticking to the lens. Lasting at least 25 washes with water, 3M™ Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog retains its anti-fog effectiveness which may allow workers to wear the spectacles for longer – resulting in potentially lower costs.

    3M™ Scotchgard™ Anti-Fog is applied to both sides of 3M™ SecureFit™ 600, providing premium anti-scratch protection and anti-fog properties for the interior and exterior surfaces.

Long-term scratch-free.

With the Rugged Anti-Scratch coating your spectacle is five times more scratch-resistant than standard 3M hard coats. The Rugged Anti-Scratch coating protects from severe abrasion and extends durability.

    Coating features.

    3M™ Rugged Anti-Scratch (RAS) coating has emerged from a rich heritage of advanced coating innovation. RAS provides excellent protection in the toughest environments.

    3M™ Rugged Anti-Scratch super hard coat leverages more than 50 years of 3M coating chemistry expertise to offer long-lasting lens protection that’s clearly different. Scientifically engineered by 3M, RAS is an advanced anti-scratch lens coating designed to stand up to the rigors of a wide range of applications such as chipping, chiselling, drilling, milling, machining, masonry, riveting, sanding and sawing.

    Being at least 5 times more scratch resistant than any hard coat on other 3M safety eyewear the Rugged Anti-Scratch coating may lower replacement costs by extending the life of the lens.
