3M™ Eye-Fit Assessment.

3M™ Eyewear Fit System.

As with all personal protective equipment, comfort is very closely linked with compliance. Improperly fitted eyewear may lead to eye injuries, so the quality and security of fit is extremely important. Unlike respiratory protection where face fit testing is required, there are no regulatory requirements regarding fitting of eyewear. While current standards suggest careful consideration should be given to eyewear fit, there is no specific guidance on how to evaluate an individual’s fit of Safety Eyewear in the standard.

  • Importance of Proper Fitting Eyewear.

Eye injuries can occur even while wearing eye protection if the safety glasses do not fit properly.

    • When fitted properly, eyewear should cover the soft tissue around the eye
    • Small spectacles on larger heads can leave exposed areas
    • Spectacles that are too large for a person can leave gaps
    • Selecting the proper eye protection for the task and ensuring proper fitting eyewear can help to reduce worker eye injuries

Assessment.

Making an assessment based on size and adjustable features is not always adequate to determine best fit and security of eyewear. The innovative 3M Eyewear Fit System uses a simple 6 step method and enables a mesured evaluation of fit.

The Coverage and Gap Gauge Tools.

In step 3, ‘Assessment’, the 3M Eyewear Fit System utilises the Coverage and Gap gauge tools to assess 4 elements of protective eyewear fit: View, Coverage, Security and Gaps.

Assessment to ensure the wearer can see in all directions of eye rotation without major obstruction to the field of view that would interfere with visibility to perform work tasks.
  • The “Coverage Gauges” assess how well the safety eyewear covers the soft tissue area around the eyes.
  • Assessment to ensure the eyewear stays in place on the wearer‘s head and does not fall off with head movement.
  • The “Gap Gauges” help to identify excessive gaps between the eyewear and the face. Large gaps can provide a clear path for flying debris.

    Replacement Foam Gasket.

The innovative foam gasket can be applied to the inside of the glasses to dependably keep out foreign objects and helps limit eye eyposure to nuisance dust while providing additional cushioning, for even more peace of mind.
